Overview
Located at a distance of 19 km from the heart of Kullu Town, Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to varieties of mammals and reptiles. The major attraction of this sanctuary is the Himalayan Black Bear which is listed as an endangered species. The total area of this sanctuary is 14.2 sq km and this forest area has been notified as a sanctuary area in the year 1954 as per the Wildlife Protection Act.

As it is not very far from Kuillu Town, visitors who come to this sanctuary area can also arrange for local sightseeing tours and enjoy different adventurous activities. This sanctuary joins the Nagru Wildlife Sanctuary in its south-west part.

The sanctuary receives average rainfall of 850 mm during monsoons. During the winter months, average snowfall of this sanctuary area is 330 mm. Bhuntar is the nearest town of Khokhan Wildlife Sanctuary. The average altitude of this sanctuary ranges from 1500 to 2800 m. During summers the maximum temperature is about 28°C and during winters the mercury dips down to -5°C.

Khokhan wildlife sanctuary is just on a distance of 21 kilometers from main tourist city Kullu.

Kullu is a tourist place and hence well connected with all the means of transportation.

By Air: Bhunthar (@ Kullu) is the nearest airport to access Kullu and Khokhan wildlife sanctuary by air.

By Rail: Jogindernagar is nearest railway station at 90 kilometers distance. Though, Shimla and Chandigarh are also the closer railways station located at 267 and 270 kilometers respectively but Chandigarh is better as routine road transports are available from this station.

By Road: From Delhi, Chandigarh and Pathankot, bus services are available to reach Kullu. State transports buses, tourist vans and taxies are also available from nearby cities to reach this sanctuary. Deluxe buses are available at affordable rate. Road distance from Shimla is 270 KM and from Chandigarh it is 278 kilometers.
